Just last week, the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) celebrated its 100th anniversary, and it got me thinking about how much speech and debate have transformed my life. Not only has it sharpened my public speaking skills, but it has also built my confidence, made me think critically, and helped me connect with people in ways I never expected.
Public Speaking: A Total Game Changer
When I first joined the debate team, I was so nervous about speaking in front of people. I remember my first debate, my hands were shaking, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. But through debate, I've learned how to command a room with my body language and tone of voice. More importantly, I now know how to craft a strong argument by connecting emotionally (pathos), building trust (ethos), and using logic (logos). Public speaking is a skill that will help me for life—whether it's for class presentations or future job interviews.
Confidence and Teamwork
Debate isn't just about individual skills—it's a team effort. You work closely with others, which helps you meet new people and appreciate different viewpoints. Learning to understand your opponent's Perspective also helps develop empathy. Even though we compete, I've built amazing friendships through debate, making the entire experience even more fun.
Quick Thinking and Rebuttals
One of the coolest things about debate is learning to think on your feet. When someone throws a curveball argument at you, you need to come up with a counter in real-time. It's a challenge, but it's so rewarding. That skill has also helped me in real life, especially when I need to make fast decisions or solve problems creatively. It turns out debate is one of the best ways to practice critical thinking.
Winning Over Judges
There's nothing quite like winning a debate. It's not just about your argument being solid—it's about connecting with the judges. Debate teaches you how to read people and tailor your points to their expectations, which is a valuable skill for any future career. Whether presenting in a boardroom, giving a speech, or even negotiating with friends, winning people over is a game-changer.
Building a Strong College Profile
Debate is also a huge boost when applying to college. Many colleges see speech and debate skills as a sign of leadership, and debate can help you stand out from the competition. According to research, students involved in debate are more likely to hold leadership roles and secure internship positions because they excel in communication and critical thinking. Plus, the National Speech and Debate Association alone offers over $100,000 in scholarships for debaters, helping students fund their education.
Studies show that students with debate experience are more likely to earn leadership roles in school and later in life. A report from the University of Missouri found that students who participate in debate have higher chances of landing internships and scholarships because of their communication skills and ability to think critically under pressure. Colleges also love to see debate on resumes because it shows commitment, leadership, and the ability to work well with others.
The Fun of Meeting New People
Another thing I love about debate is the sheer fun of meeting new people. You're constantly exposed to different perspectives and personalities, whether it's teammates or competitors. Debating against someone teaches you to respect their point of view, even if you disagree. It's not just about winning the argument—it's about understanding where people are coming from and enjoying the journey of meeting new people.
Debate Teaches You More Than Speaking
Joining the debate team has been one of my best decisions. It's not just about public speaking—debate has taught me to think critically, empathize with others, and work as part of a team. The personal benefits I've gained from debate are immense and I believe it can do the same for you. The skills I've learned will help me in school, college, and future jobs. Plus, with so many scholarships and leadership opportunities available to debaters, it's a no-brainer. So, if you're considering joining a debate team, go for it. You'll learn a lot, meet great people, and have a blast along the way!
